How to keep your nails healthy and beautiful

We know the seasons change, but the care of your hand and foot nails continues in every season. In winter the air becomes dry and, with the warm rains, they tend to dry out. But the good thing is that we have prepared some tips for you to keep your nails healthy, strong and beautiful in winter.

Podiatrist and manicurist, Sonia, explains that first of all, to avoid chilblains, it is necessary to always dry well between the toes. In addition, she points out that very hot water can weaken your nails a little. Check out the professional’s main tips below:

  • Moisturize your hands and feet
  • Use herbal oils
  • Take care of your enamel
  • Pay attention to socks
  • Strengthening treatments

Let’s Explain it,

1. Moisturize your hands and feet

Sonia highlights that hydration is the basis for keeping the nails of both hands and feet healthy. And if, on the one hand, very hot baths can be the enemy of both the skin and the cuticles, on the other hand there is a solution: use moisturizing creams for hands and feet.

Moisturize hands

The best thing to do is to check the label for the type of moisturizing cream and whether it is for hands, feet or body skin, for example.

“Hands have thinner skin and require specific creams for hands. For feet, it changes a bit because it depends on each type of foot and skin,” he explains.

It is advisable to apply moisturizer on your hands 3 times a day and cream on your feet once after the shower.

2. Use herbal oils

To strengthen and regenerate nails and cuticles, manicurists and podiatrists recommend the use of herbal oils such as tea tree, copaiba, sunflower and glycerin. Oils should be applied to the nails once or twice a day. “These oils protect against fungus, they also help hydrate and regenerate nails,” he explains.

3. Take care of your enamel

The guideline is to keep your nails with nail polish for 4 days and, after removing the nail polish, wait two days before painting again.

As for toenails, it is advisable not to use any nail polish, mainly because in winter the feet are “stuffed” for a long time.

In addition to filing your nails, it is very important to cut them regularly to help strengthen them. Sonia also suggests keeping your nails in an oval or almond shape, as these are more resistant and break less often than square-shaped nails. “Also, using strong bases can help keep your nails strong”, he says.

Manicurists and podiatrists recommend not removing too much cuticles, especially on toenails. “Only remove the edges, but not the matrix. Just push the cuticle into the central area to protect the nails,” he advises.

4. Pay attention to socks

It is good to wear thick, warm socks in winter, but pay attention to the type of socks and choose them correctly. She suggests, “Sewn socks can cause calluses around the toenails. To avoid these problems, it is ideal to choose seamless socks.”

5. Strengthening treatments

Sonia comments that there is a treatment to strengthen nails with low-intensity laser, blue LED. Laser can be an option for those who want faster results. She concludes, “This treatment helps in nail regeneration and can reduce recovery time by two to three weeks.”

These are the main tips to keep your fingernails and toenails hydrated, strong and beautiful during winter. If there is any kind of injury to the nails, consult a doctor first.
